If you kept up with my blogs over the summer, you know I spent a good portion of it touring the country with Tim Lytvinenko, Bowerbirds and Megafaun. It was quite an adventure. Tim and I took countless photos and recounted all of our adventures on welldonetour.com, the photo-site we created for the tour.
It really doesn’t seem like long since tour ended, but Megafaun has already made their way all the way around the country and back to the west coast, this time touring with Bon Iver.
This was a big tour for them, as not only were the venues gigantic (and packed full of fans), but there was a huge history between these bands that made the tour particularly special.
See, there was this band. They were around long ago, and based in Raleigh, NC. Their name was DeYarmond Edison, and they were incredible. However, after a couple of albums, the band broke up, and two separate resulting bands formed: Justin went to form Bon Iver, and Bill, Brad, and Joe went to form Megafaun. This tour is a reunion that not only the bands, but a lot of folks, including myself, have been waiting for.
I went to catch the show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland. Seeing the boys playing a sold-out show in such an epically beautiful structure was wonderful. I’m so proud to see how far they have come in just a few months, and my heart was aching to be on the road again. I felt like dropping out of school and hopping on the tour bus and never coming back. One more beer and I may have been crying in the crowd.

(That’s Justin from Bon Iver playing bass in the background.)

Seriously, go listen to them right now.

Thanks. END!

oh oh oh oh I have to comment. I’m in love with justin vernon and this makes me extra jealous because with their close ties to Raleigh, they have to come back soon but seem to be nowhere near. Sad. thanks for the beautiful pictures!
Helena, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking these amazing live shots of the bands. Phil and Brad are my sons so I especially appreciate how you captured the joy and musical connection of this tour with Bon Iver. This is “a band of brothers” from long ago who are living out their dreams. The pictures tell that story. You have a gift and thank you for sharing it!
Wonderful pictures that captured the excitement and joy of the tour. I’ve known the Cook brothers since they were born, and know that their music is as big as their hearts!
Helena, great post, fantastic images.
I first met “the boys” when they were still in high school and knew they had a great amount of talent – Wonderful to see where they are today.
We wish them all the best.
Those of us who have been following Megafaun and Bon Iver are THRILLED about this tour. We can’t catch any of the shows so thank you for the terrific shots. They all deserve the success they are having. Peace and power to all involved!

Like Chet, I’ve been following the band since High School. I’m just one of many who are vicariously living the life. It’s great to see, and is a little bit unbelievable, how far they have come in such a short time. I’ve always thought Phil is one of the best keyboard players I’ve ever met; not to mention his other musical talents.
Great photos. It looks like you have a considerable amount of talent as well.
